Siliconized vs Non-Siliconized Fiber: What's the Difference
Why silicone treatment changes a fiber's properties, and how that affects the finished product.
Siliconizing is the process of treating polyester fiber with a silicone compound during production. It doesn't change the fiber's thickness (denier), but it noticeably affects how the fiber behaves to the touch, on the production line, and inside the finished product.
What silicone treatment does
The silicone coating reduces friction between individual fibers. As a result, the filling feels softer, opens up more easily, and produces less dust when processed on a production line. Fibers slide against each other instead of catching — which also lowers the risk of clumping inside the finished product over time.
How non-siliconized fiber behaves
Untreated fiber feels firmer, and tends to stick together and clump, especially after repeated compression. During production it generates more dust and requires more careful handling on equipment.
